One of the most highly awaited films of the year, X-Men Origins Wolverine comes short of pleasing especially those who’ve loved the first two films in the series. Audiences aren't buying into dramas right now. Comedies, comic book-inspired films, action movies, teen films...those are getting the attention of moviegoers. Anything that makes us forget about what's happening in our world and gets us caught up in a total fantasy experience for a couple of hours is doing well at the box office.

Director Joe Wright chose The Soloist as his first American film after having earned high praise for his work helming Pride and Prejudice and Atonement. And Wright appears to have been the right choice for this tricky film. He handles the scenes of homeless people and the mentally ill living hard lives on the streets without sugar-coating his subject matter. Wright's made an honest, unflinching film that's uncomfortable to watch at times, a pure joy to behold at others, and overall as faithful to its source material as possible while still being cinematically entertaining. I'm hoping audiences will give it a chance, despite the bad release date and somber subject matter.

You will not be disappointed with the third installment of the Ice Age franchise, especially with all the adorable and amiable characters (including new ones too!) providing endless fun and humour thoughout the entire 95 minutes. Everybody's favourite squirrel, Scrat, is still as relentless as ever in search of his beloved acorn. This alone should be sufficient to seal the deal for most.

you can afford the slight hefty premium for the 3D screenings, do ensure that you sit for the 3D version as it complements the film very well indeed (or should say that the film complements the 3D feature well?)! It's definitely a film where you can bring basically anyone along to, even your maid. I think your maid deserves it, especially if you have been overclocking her to outperform her intended work rate of house chores.

John Connor is back in Terminator Salvation, and more pissed than before in the latest reincarnation of the Terminator series. Connor is the believed prophet that is leading the “resistance” in the war against the machines. MCG is the latest to take on the Terminator world and what the near future holds in store for human kind. With Skynet building a massive army of robots, the human race is slowly dwindling in numbers and left without the ability to fight back. The storyline is weak but the effects take over the screen for almost the entire film. The breaks in between are few and far between, but lack much luster. The luster, it seems, was all used up by the special effects. The T-600 series and the newest, the T-800s, are all done very well and are pretty darned believable. The cityscape of Skynet’s headquarters, the barren wasteland, all a job well done by the special effects team. The ships and terminators themselves are very, very impressive. The sounds, the explosions, the overall feel of this movie I loved. I honestly loved the majority of the movie.

Plot:

Christian Bale takes on the role of Melvin Purvis, the FBI agent in charge of hunting down Dillinger. Bale played Purvis well and showed an awesome intensity in his manhunt for Dillinger. One problem I found, though, was that there wasn’t really enough back story on Purvis, so you couldn’t really feel close to the character. The other problem was that I thought the film would have equal Dillinger and Purvis screen time much like “Heat” did but more time was spent on Dillinger, so Purvis felt more like a background character.

Another performance high light was Stephen Graham who played Baby Face Nelson, another public enemy. An early bank robbery scene with Dillinger and his crew was more organized while in the later bank robbery scene with Nelson you saw a different style play out. Nelson was a maniac and shot up the place while Dillinger played it cool, so you saw that Dillinger wasn’t so completely evil a bad guy as the FBI described him to be.The pacing the film moved both fast and slow but not enough time was spent on characters like Purvis and I wish that the film had run longer then its two and a half hour length. If they had dug deeper into Bale I think that would have improved the film a lot. The film was great, I am just hoping that they don’t cut down any of the shoot outs – those were definitely the highlights. I will be seeing this when it comes out July 1st, and will be curious to see what the final cut will be.

Sadly, Steven Seagal is not really driven anywhere in Driven to Kill. The man is getting older, fatter (well, not that much fatter), and I thought this might be a geriatric revenge film on par with Death Wish 3. I wish someone had to drive him someplace so he could go kill someone, but the title is misleading on that front.

Steven Seagal. Direct to video. What do you need to know? You need to know that this is a fairly efficient and brutal action movie that manages to make the most of Seagal. There’s not much else to look for in this movie, though he does have an effective antagonist in Igor Jijikine, who is best known for being eaten by ants in Indiana Jones and the Terrible Movie. Seagal plays a father with mod ties who comes home for his daughter and he upcoming marriage. But his ex-wife (who he’d still fuk) gets murdered and his daughter ends up in a coma. Bad move, bad guys.The film moves fast and there’s a number of actions scenes well staged. This is easily one of the better Seagal DTV efforts (should we call them DTD or DTB these days? Dunno). Is there much else to say after that? Not really. Blood splatters and the plot is diverting enough.

Filmmaking standards in Bollywood seem to have gone really high. Producers now opt for Sylvester Stallone over Sunny Deol for that mandatory special appearance in the climax as the messiah who saves the heroine from hoodlums. The shady second female fiddle who the heroine keeps abusing through the film has upgraded from Rakhi Sawant to Denise Richards. If that indirect insult to Hollywood still seems indicative, there is much more hardcore swearing in store.Viraj (Akshay Kumar), an Indian stuntman working in Hollywood, is a compulsive womanizer who goes flirting around with every other woman in the town. Hey Baby, doesn’t that Akki sound familiar? For one good hour he goes on flirting outrageously with Simrita (Kareena Kapoor), a supermodel who is more of a mannequin with a disgusted face. The battle of sexes works adversely on your reflexes amidst jarring songs, commotional cake-fights, loud performances and toilet humour.

What’s sad is that Kambakkht Ishq is a remake of Kamal Hassan’s Tamil film Pammal K. Sambandam (2002) and despite having a readymade rubbish reference point, the makers still couldn’t foresee the mess. Surprisingly four writers (Kiran Kotrial, Anvita Dutt Gupta, Ishita Mohitra, Sabbir Khan) are credited for the screenplay who end up spoiling the broth. Anvita’s dialogues are crude and crass at several instances complementing the literal toilet humour. There are unapologetic scenes where Akshay Kumar is (b)anally hauled or Amrita Arora gets farted on her face. Out of the blue, some patriotism and motherly love is abruptly induced to accommodate Sylvester Stallone in the script.

Turns out, it wasn't impossible to do Watchmen justice on-screen – it just took a long time, many different points of view, scripts drafted and deals done and dusted. Moore's 338 pages have been condensed into 150-odd minutes of the finest super-hero movie ever made, hands down. Zack Snyder is the man who accomplished it, but Alan Moore was the artisan author who made it possible. Hopefully, if Alan Moore is thinking anything at this moment, it's a small concession of thanks to a director who really did right by him – and by the fans who sat aside and waited, wanting and hoping.

If it could be said that The Dark Knight legitimised comic book films with a level of maturity and sophistication that caught cynics off-guard, then Watchmen cements comic book films of this calibre as equals among any other, irrespective of genre. The United States is on the brink of all-out nuclear war with Russia. 'Tricky Dick' Nixon remains in power, his gnarled and ageing finger hovering over the Red Button that ends the world. Super-heroes and masked vigilantes, after decades of notoriety and mixed reactions from the public, are on the way out, as congress signs a bill outlawing super-heroics. Everyone is alienated. People in the streets are powerless to improve their situation, and that creates anger and volatility – aggression that eventually embroils the main characters in the world of Alan Moore's Watchmen, faithfully and carefully adapted to screen.

EVEN BEFORE this movie was released, the controversies had begun. And, believe me, that’s a good sign. For controversies arouse interest and the movie is lapped up. On that score Ron Howard directed Angels And Demons (AAD) has done pretty well for itself with $48.0 million in North America over the opening weekend piping past last week’s release Star Trek. It has grossed $ 152 million worldwide. It remains to be seen what its fate would be in the coming weeks.

AAD is an American film adaptation of Dan Brown’s novel by the same name. It is the sequel to The Da Vinci Code (TDVC) although it was published and took place before the novel TDVC. Tom Hanks reprises the lead role of Robert Langdon. The film has so far got positive reviews from the critics despite controversies.AAD revolves around the murder of several top Cardinals in Vatican City due to an ancient rivalry between the secret society of Illuminati and The Roman Catholic Church. Director Vishnuvardhan seems to have mastered the art of making a trendy, sophisticated and chic film. The young film-maker often led his films do all the talking. After touching the peak in ‘Billa’, Vishnu is out to face the litmus test with ‘Sarvam’. With his trusted lieutenant Arya by his side and the likes of cinematographer Nirav Shah and music composer Yuvan Shankar Raja around, he has come up with a movie that certainly lives up to his reputation.Vishnu has tried a marriage between commercial and real cinema in ‘Sarvam’ and seems to have succeeded fairly. Though the storyline seems to be familiar, yet with his typical visual narration, he walks away with all honours. As like his other films, Vishnuvardhan has blended romance and action at right mix.

A convincing thriller is a rarity in Tamil cinema. Vishnu has taken it in his stride and rendered a movie that is convincing and makes the audience glued to their seats. What more, he has struck to his task without deviating from the storyline.Arya and Vishnuvardhan share a good rapport as was evident in their previous film – ‘Arindhum Ariyamalum’ and ‘Pattiyal’. With ‘Sarvam’, the duo seems to have struck a hat-trick. Polished by Bala in ‘Naan Kadavul’, Arya comes across as a cool, suave architect who runs behind Trisha in the second half and goes hammer and tongs flexing his muscles to save the life of a young innocent child.

Vishnuvardhan deserves all credit for making it stylish from the first frame. Nirav Shah’s lens does all the magic capturing thrilling moments well. He captures the various locales of Chennai, Rajasthan and forest lands well. Yuvan’s brisk re-recording towards the second half is praiseworthy.On the whole, Sarvam, produced by Ayngaran International, is a visual delight that is sure to thrill the audience.

We first meet up with Carl Fredericksen as a young boy who dreams of being an adventurer as he watches newsreel footage of explorer Charles Muntz. Carl's quiet and sort of shy, but his love of Muntz leads him to Ellie, a sassy little girl who is as outgoing as Carl is introverted.

They make for a great team and in fact will go on to share their lives together. From elementary school through high school and on up into adulthood, Carl and Ellie are inseparable, sharing every moment of joy and sadness together while dreaming of a time when they can actually take off on an adventure in the wilds of South America just like their hero, Muntz. But jobs and health issues and whatnot have a way of intruding on dreams, and Carl and Ellie grow old never having visited the South American jungles. And then, sadly, Carl becomes a widower with just his lovely little house and his beautiful memories of Ellie to keep him company.

Writer/directors Pete Docter and Bob Peterson tell us all this in no more than the first 20 minutes of Up. So much backstory crammed into such a small time frame - they should teach other filmmakers how to accomplish this with as much integrity and finesse as they display here.Unfortunately, Carl's home is right in the path of new construction. Unable to stand up legally to those who want to level his house, Carl finds the perfect way to keep his home intact. He'll kill two birds with one stone. He wants to visit South America before it's too late and he needs to remove his house from its current location. The solution: ties thousands of helium-filled balloons to his roof and float away. He's even rigged up a way to steer.

It's been a couple years since he visited his pals at the American Museum of Natural History -- you know, the exhibits and models that come to life after dark, thanks to the magic of an Egyptian artifact -- and when he does, he's alarmed to learn that most of them are being shipped off to the Smithsonian archives in Washington D.C., where they'll sit in storage crates for the foreseeable future.

Ah yes, the story. Once again directed by Shawn Levy (Cheaper by the Dozen) and written by Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon (The Pacifier, Balls of Fury), Battle of the Smithsonian suffers from the same tacked-on message and heavy-handed sentimentality as its predecessor. The story's resolution doesn't make any sense at all, and seems like an ending you'd put in as a placeholder until you could come up with something smarter. Luckily, it's easy enough to ignore those elements and just enjoy the fun.

The “TV movie” picks up shortly after Michael and co. get exonerated. Michael and Sara get married in a very simple ceremony on the beach. While celebrating Sara is arrested for the murder of Christina and is sent to a women’s prison. She is looking at life in jail so Michael decides to do what he loves most and break Sara out of prison.

The FBI have a feeling that Michael might be trying to come up with a way to break out Sara so they offer Alex his job back if he spies on Michael and relays info back to them. At first he agrees but does the right thing and changes his mind. Alex has been a favourite character of mine and to see the change in his character over the show has been great. He’s the one that’s changed the most and for the better.

The plus points of the film are Prabhas’s makeover and styling as Billa and good production values. On the flip side, the second half should have been effectively handled. Prabhas has terrific comedy timing in him (Bujjigadu film and pre-interval episode in Billa). Hope somebody would make the best use of it the future. We have to wait and see how audiences take Billa.

Billa’s story is based on Don film penned by Javed Akhtar. Screenplay of the film is adequate in the first half and is little disappointing in the second half. Director concentrated more on the styling in the first half. Direction of the film is adequate.

Well, This movie does not qualify in horror whatsoever (unless you included Christian Bales performance), but since there are already a few reviews and tons of news over the months. I thought I would through in my two cents. Plot: Do I really need to get into detail. J

ohn Connor (Christian Bale) leads a human resistance in post-apocalyptic Earth in 2018 against an onslaught of Terminators which is run by a self aware super computer named Skynet. Basically, with all the information you get from the trailers, and released info from Director McG himself, its hard to miss what this film is about. Now on to my thoughts. This movie is nothing special. Unfortunatley, I went into the theater with the mindset that this movie was going to kick some royal ass. And I left very disappointed.

Christian Bales performance is very one sided. Its like he was playing his Batman role all over again (minus the Mask and Cape). Anton Yelchin was cast as Kyle Reese and while his performance wasn't terrible. It was nothing special as well. The only notable member of the cast im going to mention is Sam Worthington. He play the mysterious character of Marcus Wright, and who in my opinion, gave his best performance ever. Now that action sequences in the movie DID indeed kick some serious ass. And what can you expect, 95% of this movie is action. And the opening scene in the movie is incredible. Thats why this movie gets a 6 from me. The special effects were amazing. Yet some scenes just felt like they didn't belong. The movie in a whole was ok.

The opening scene kept me guessing as to how successful the film would ultimately be. It serves as a super-quick introduction to Logan’s rage and guilt, which are given as some kind of inner drive for him and visualised in the form of a howling motif we will see again and again. In the sequence, we see James Logan as a young child in the 19th Century, sharing a bedroom with his brother, later to become Vincent Creed and be played by Liev Schreiber (the separate surnames issue is not entirely clear, but I’m sure you will make an educated guess as to how it might be resolved).

A man who appears to be their father rouses the children before another man arrives and violence erupts. The events of this brief, fairly well presented and mostly exciting sequence are designed to provide some depth and motivation to the characters, and particularly in respect of the two brothers’ relationship, but it could honestly have benefited from running longer, opening out more and allowing a more meaningful relationship to form between the children and the adults. Nonetheless, what the scene does achieve would be greatly missed had the scene been skipped.

The Unborn is a supernatural thriller that draws upon the legend of a dybbuk, a malevolent spirit that refuses to leave the human world and inhabits the body of a person. Protagonist Casey Beldon (Odette Yustman) is plagued by merciless dreams, visions of strange looking dogs, and an evil child with bright blue eyes. After being hit with a mirror by her neighbor's son, Casey's eyes begin to change color and she learns she had a twin brother who died in the womb. Casey begins to suspect that the spirit haunting her is the soul of her dead twin, being possessed by a dybbuk, wanting to be born so it can transfer to the world of the living. Casey meets a woman named Sofi, who is revealed to be her grandmother. Sofi explains that she had a twin brother who was killed in Nazi experiments in Auschwitz when they were both just children.

The boy was brought back to life by a dybbuk who intended to use his body as a portal into the world of the living. Sofi killed her twin to stop the dybbuk, and now it haunts her family for revenge. Sofi refers Casey to Rabbi Sendak (Gary Oldman), who can perform a Jewish exorcism to remove the dybbuk. The exorcism is performed, but things go awry as the dybbuk tries to stop Rabbi Sendak from completing the ritual. The dybbuk disappears after the exorcism and the death of Casey's boyfriend. Soon afterward, Casey learns she is pregnant with twins.

Yet another origins film in the pre-summer of origins season, Star Trek is the story of how Captain James Tiberius Kirk (played by Chris Pine) came to be captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise. I’m not sure how much of an origins story this is, though, because the characters get a lot of help from the future.

Screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (Transformers, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, the TV series “Fringe, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys,’’ “Xena: Warrior Princess’’ and “Alias’’ as well as movies Mission Impossible II, Legend of Zorro and the coming Star Trek sequel) told a good origin story. But I question how good the story actually is.With time warp and blasts from the future, the plot gets a little confusing. I couldn’t tell if the film is set in the present or the future. I’m leaning toward the present.

The end of the first film seemed to quite clearly rule out any possibility of a sequel and one of the most telling characteristics of Crank: High Voltage is simply that it exists. This is a film that disregards anything like the basic narrative logic of a ‘dead’ character staying dead because the realities of dying are rooted in the rigid actualities of biology, chemistry and physics. These are three things that the film has absolutely no use for. But it does make great play with non-rigid and non-actual cartoon versions of all the above. When the film is at its best, it verges on Tex Avery, and Jason Statham is Screwy Squirrel given permission to cause suffering, pain and offence

The biggest changes are technical and, as a result, aesthetic. The film employs a wide-angle hand-video style for the vast majority of shots, and the footage has been processed* to strobe slightly, as per film that was shot with the shutter angled and shutter speed increased (see Saving Private Ryan or Gladiator). The resulting look is both crisp and jerky and, if nothing else, prevents either of the two prevalent ‘video’ looks - the normal, too crisp style and the ‘fixed’, softened pseudo film-look. There are a number of shots in which the camera operator tracks back from the actor and passes through an obstacle - a narrow break in a chain link fence, for an example - giving access that would have been costly and time consuming to replicated with a larger camera or a crane. As a result, the images are up close and intimate, though this is probably not your idea of a pleasant kind of intimacy.

Suriya, who proved his credentials as a versatile actor doing varied roles untill recently, has taken a litmus test of doing a mass commercial hero in ‘Ayan’. In the end, he emerges out as a clear winner leaving his impression all through the film.

The striking feature of the movie is Suriya’s amazing screen-presence. He is right there delivering his best. Be it romance, action or comedy, Suriya is at his crackling form serving the very basic purpose of purpose of entertaining the masses.

The spine-chilling chase in the streets of Congo, choreographed by stunt master Franz Spilhaus deserves a special mention. M S Prabhu capturing the mood of film in various shades and tones is a pillar of strength to Anand. Harris Jayaraj’s songs are peppy. Watch out for the opening song “Pala Palakura”, which is racy. However the real scene-stealer is editor Anthony. His slick work manages to sustain interest all throughout.

No doubt, ‘Ayan’ is one more in the kitty of successful movies being belted out by Sun Pictures.

Their confinement time is cut short however, when a mysterious alien robot lands on Earth and begins storming the country.

The film is all about loud music, fast cars, dare-devil stunts, interesting dialogues and adrenaline driven races. This genre normally attracts teenagers but surprisingly it keeps you too on the edge of your seats. The story is clichéd and so is the action but it is the actors that make the difference. Do not think much about the plot or the reasoning and you will not be disappointed. Watch this film only for its special effects and EQ – entertainment quotient.
